I watched some movies recently and here are some non-spoiler mini-reviews.
The Amateur – Saw this before it left theaters. There was only one two showings on the Saturday I went. A solid thriller/spy movie with an interesting twist in the “skilled individual out for revenge” storyline. Nothing too surprising in the plot but good to see the plans executed.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim – I liked it but it does get a bit slow in the middle. The action scenes are solid. The design of the locations and a character at the end places this in the same continuity as the Peter Jackson films.
Mickey 17 – I’ve liked all Bong Joon Ho movies I’ve seen including this one. They all touch upon haves and have nots and I like the sci-fi setting. More of Okja / Snowpiercer than Parasite but with some dark comedy undertones. Robert Pattinson is great in this and both Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette’s characters grossed me out.
Get Out and Nope – Rewatched Get Out and first watch of Nope. Jordan Peele really builds a connection with the characters in his movies. Get Out is still excellent and tense. Nope is wild and the whole second half of the film takes an unexpected turn even though there’s bits of it in the trailer. I need to watch Us and I’m looking forward to Him later this year.
Split and Glass – Both just ok. I’d recommend Split for James McAvoy’s acting as the different personalities are well done and distinctive. Glass has its moments but the pacing is more slow than suspenseful. Of course there’s a twist at the end but I don’t think the movie overall pays off. Many of M. Night’s movies have a certain tone with an explanation at the end and it just doesn’t work like it used to.
