My website continues to be neglected. It sat mostly unchanged for 8+ years. I don’t have any monitoring on it so I discovered well after the fact that it was unfortunately broken for several months. For some reason years ago I had set it to use a particular PHP5. Eventually this broke with an automated update. I did a complete re-install by hand but it’s been years since I last looked into all the details and I apparently left something open. After a week or two this vulnerability was discovered and I was infected with malware. I spent several hours this past weekend cleaning several different sites’ directories and doing re-installs using my hosting provider’s managed installation tool. Lesson learned.
One reason I started paying attention again is that I finally started on a side-project I’ve been thinking about for a couple of years now. In a cross-state move several years ago, I downsized a large number of toys that I and my parents had kept since my childhood. They were by and large in excellent condition and any one of the toy lines I had could have formed the foundation of a dedicated toy collection. Alas, even though we were moving to a larger house, I really wanted to have my collections on display as much as possible and to have free use of our garage. These collections had taken up space in the guest room at my parents for decades and I wasn’t going to get a storage locker for any overflow.
